New and improved benefits take effect May 1, 2026, strengthening coverage and support for members and their families

The Trustees of the Local 1059 Benefits Trust are thrilled to announce the following improvements to Local 1059 member benefits. These enhancements, taking effect May 1, 2026, provide stronger financial protection, expanded coverage, and new supports to help members and their families stay healthy, prepared, and secure.

  1. Weekly indemnity (short-term disability) increases from $524 to $600 per week, for up to 26 weeks (for eligible members).
  2. Long-term disability increases from $1,000 to $1,300 per month, payable for up to 24 months.
  3. New: Critical illness benefit for members only, providing $10,000 upon diagnosis of a covered illness. Full details on the new critical illness benefit, including covered conditions, are available here. To file a claim for the new critical illness benefit, members must contact WA Health directly.
  4. Member life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment increase from $100,000 to $125,000.
  5. Dependent life insurance (spouse and unmarried children) increases from $10,000 to $15,000.
  6. For members not using the Local 1059 Dental Office, the Ontario Dental Association fee guide moves from 2022 to 2024 and will maintain a two-year lag.
  7. Professional services (osteopath, naturopath, acupuncture, podiatry, chiropody): $500 annual maximum per provider, $1,500 combined annual maximum (per family member).
  8. Labourers’ Local 1059 Optical Centre: the $500 annual maximum can now be applied to both regular prescription glasses and prescription safety glasses in the same year.
  9. Hearing aid coverage now covers 2 hearing aids, with a maximum of $3,500 every 5 years.
  10. Group legal plan: home purchase, custody, and separation claims increase to $1,500.
